Recovery Help Available for Tornado-Affected Residents
Two Centers Will Offer Support
Residents and business owners affected by a tornado and severe weather in the Appleton-Menasha area can get help at two disaster recovery centers. One center will open in Menasha, followed by a second location in Grand Chute one week later. The centers will help people apply for federal assistance and learn what recovery programs may be available.
The storms affected people in Winnebago and Outagamie counties. A major disaster declaration made federal aid available to those who qualify. Representatives from the federal disaster agency and the federal small business agency will be at the centers to answer questions, assist with applications, and explain recovery options.
Where to Go
- Menasha: The center will be at the former university campus at 1655 University Drive. It is expected to stay open for at least 30 days.
- Grand Chute: The center will be at the local fire department at 2250 Grand Chute Boulevard. It will operate for six days.
Both centers will follow the same weekly schedule:
- Monday, Wednesday, and Friday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Tuesday and Thursday: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Saturday: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The centers are intended for residents and businesses still dealing with storm damage or recovery costs. Staff can explain how to apply and what information may be needed. People who have already received help from local groups or other programs are still encouraged to submit an application.
What Assistance May Cover
Getting help from a local organization does not automatically make someone ineligible for federal assistance. Each application can be reviewed based on the person’s situation and the costs they faced because of the disaster.
For eligible households, individual assistance may help with temporary housing, basic repairs to a damaged home, and other disaster-related expenses that are not covered, or are not fully covered, by insurance. Applying is an important first step for people who want to find out whether they can receive support.
Residents can apply online through the federal disaster assistance website or by calling 800-621-3362. The application deadline is December 7.
Transportation and Recovery
People who need a ride to a recovery center can call 866-907-1493 to ask about transportation assistance. This may help residents who cannot easily reach a center on their own.
Local recovery work has involved community organizations, volunteers, and neighbors helping one another. The federal centers add another way for people who continue to face challenges to ask questions and seek help. Residents with storm-related needs can visit either location during its listed hours or apply by phone or online.
