Transitioning from Military Service to Ranching: A Unique Program for Veterans

After serving their country, many veterans find transitioning back to civilian life challenging. A former Army Ranger, Jeremy Clark, found a unique way to help them - by introducing them to the cowboy lifestyle and the world of ranching.

Jeremy and his wife, Heather, started off with their own venture in ranching along the Gulf Coast. They initially bought four cows and embarked on their journey in cattle farming without even a fence to their name. The venture turned out to be a thrilling experience and soon, their farm grew into a thriving business with more than 130 acres of land.

However, they soon found themselves wanting to do more, especially to help their fellow veterans. Hence, they came up with an innovative solution.

Introducing 'Vets to Cowboys'

Jeremy and Heather established a nonprofit organization, 'Vets to Cowboys', with a mission to help veterans explore their potential in agriculture. This program connects veterans with experienced cattle ranchers who serve as mentors, teaching them the nuances and intricacies of the industry.

Ranching is not just about cattle rearing, it requires hard work, physical fitness, and dedication. It needs a sense of responsibility and leadership skills, similar to those acquired during military service. As Heather notes, the values embraced by veterans align beautifully with those needed in agriculture. This synergy between the resilience of a warrior and the spirit of an American cowboy is what 'Vets to Cowboys' aims to harness.

Many veterans, after their service to the nation, often find themselves wondering about their next steps. Some may not even consider ranching as a career option, but this program provides them with a fresh perspective and a renewed sense of purpose. It also helps them to bond with the ranching community, fostering a sense of teamwork and camaraderie akin to their service days.

Mentoring the Next Generation

One of the key objectives of 'Vets to Cowboys' is to guide younger veterans towards a sustainable career in ranching. As Jeremy points out, learning the tricks of the trade from seasoned ranchers can be invaluable, especially for those who are first-generation ranchers.

Heather echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of preserving the knowledge and wisdom typically passed down through generations, which cannot be found in textbooks. Through the program, they aim to fill this knowledge gap, partnering with seasoned ranchers to mentor incoming veterans.

Ranching for Mental Health

Ranching also has therapeutic benefits. Workforce development is a key aspect of the program, where veterans acquire new skills not only in agriculture but also in other fields. The program has seen some success, with five veterans already benefiting from it.

Jeremy also highlights the importance of mental health. Being amidst nature, working with animals, and the physical labor associated with ranching, can help veterans cope with their mental health challenges, including post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression. He also emphasizes the importance of food security and the process of getting food from the farm to the table.

Jeremy believes that by helping veterans transition from military service to farming, they can contribute to the replenishment of the dwindling number of farms. This echoes the findings of a recent survey that showed a significant decline in the number of farms in the country.

Since its inception, 'Vets to Cowboys' has received positive feedback from the participating veterans. The program's founders are now planning to expand it further, with fundraising events to fund a mobile facility that will enable them to reach and train veterans in other parts of the country.
