GOP Congressman Tom Kean Running Unopposed Despite Months-Long Absence from Washington Due to Medical Issue

Uncontested Republican Candidate's Mysterious Absence Puzzles Voters

Tom Kean, a Republican representative, is not facing any competition in the upcoming primary as he aims to secure a third term in one of the country's most fiercely contested seats. However, the voters have been left in the dark about Kean's whereabouts for the past few months and it remains uncertain when he will resume his duties in Washington.

Kean has not yet informed the House Speaker and his team about his expected return date. This has left a gap in the already narrow Republican majority since early this year.

Unknown Medical Condition

Through a social media post in late April, Kean revealed he is dealing with a "personal medical issue", however, he did not provide additional details. He did assure his followers that he would be back "very soon". Furthermore, he later informed a local publication that he would be returning in the "next couple of weeks".

Concerns from Colleagues

His continuous absence has started to worry his fellow Republicans. They are not only concerned about his health but also the potential difficulties his absence might pose to the party's efforts to retain a critical swing seat in the upcoming midterm elections.

Additionally, some Republicans are expressing annoyance over what they perceive as a significant public relations blunder. They are frustrated by the lack of specific information from Kean's team about his return, which has led to national attention.

Despite multiple attempts to reach out to Kean's office staff, no comments have been provided so far.

Private Conversations

Kean has held private discussions with the House Speaker since his last vote on March 5. However, if the Speaker or other leaders are aware of Kean's medical condition, they have not shared this information with their colleagues or staff.

Speculations Abound

The prolonged absence of Kean has left his Republican colleagues in the House puzzled. Some have privately questioned what would happen if Kean were forced to withdraw from the race after the primary. In such a scenario, under New Jersey law, GOP county committee leaders would fill the post-primary vacancy. However, Kean has clearly stated last month that he plans to run for reelection.

Continued Support

Despite his absence, Kean still enjoys the support of the party leadership. The House Speaker has publicly endorsed him to reporters. He also received a formal endorsement from a former president ahead of his primary.

Democratic Response

So far, Kean's Democratic opponents in the primary have largely avoided using his absence as a political weapon. However, Republicans anticipate it may become a more prominent line of attack once voters select their Democratic nominee on Tuesday. The Democratic primary features four candidates who have each raised more than $1 million. The leading contender is a former Navy helicopter pilot, Rebecca Bennett, who has raised nearly $3 million.
