Armed Attack on Building Hosting the Israeli Consulate in Istanbul
Recently, a building in Istanbul that hosts the Israeli Consulate was the scene of a violent attack. Three armed criminals targeted the building, leading to a fierce shootout with local law enforcement. This incident resulted in the death of one of the attackers, while the other two were injured and subsequently apprehended.
Injuries and Details About the Attackers
The confrontation led to minor injuries for two police officers. The officials stated that the attackers were armed with long-barreled weapons. The origins of these attackers trace back to Izmit, a city situated about 60 miles east of Istanbul. They had rented a car to reach their destination. One of the attackers had ties to a group known for misusing religion for their pursuits, although the group's name was not disclosed.
Historically, the Islamic State group has been responsible for several deadly attacks in Turkey. However, it's unclear if this attack has any connection to the group.
The two attackers who were wounded and captured are brothers, known as Onur C. and Enes C. The former has prior legal issues related to drug offenses. Both are currently under rigorous questioning.
Footage from the Incident
Footage from the incident shows one of the attackers wielding what looks like an assault rifle. He's seen hiding behind a bus while trading shots with the police. One police officer is seen falling to the ground, seemingly after being shot, before seeking cover behind a tree.
Of the two officers who were injured, one was shot in the leg and the other in the ear.
Location of the Incident
The building housing the Israeli Consulate is located in Levent, a key business district of Istanbul. It's important to note that there were no Israeli diplomats present in any of the Israeli missions in Turkey at the time of the incident. Due to ongoing security concerns and strained relations with Turkey, Israel had withdrawn its diplomats.
Investigation and Response
Following the incident, local law enforcement swiftly cordoned off the building and blocked several surrounding roads. A team of forensic experts in protective gear was also seen scouring the area for evidence.
The US ambassador to Turkey responded to the incident, expressing condemnation and praising the Turkish authorities for their quick and decisive action. He stated that such attacks on diplomatic missions are not just attacks on individual nations, but an assault on the international order.
Similarly, Israel's Foreign Ministry also condemned the attack and commended the swift action of the Turkish security forces.
It is crucial to clarify that previous reports wrongly stated that two attackers were killed. Only one attacker was killed during the incident, while the other two were injured and subsequently captured.
The incident is currently under investigation by three prosecutors, including a deputy chief prosecutor.
