How Much Food Do You Actually Store Per Person?

Curious how much food folks here actually keep on hand per person, and what your calculations are based on. I’ve seen a thousand different “rules” from a three-day supply to a full year, but when I try to break it down, the numbers (calories, nutrition, storage space) get a bit overwhelming. For my own plan, I aim for about three months per person, focused on calorie-dense staples like rice, beans, oats, canned proteins, plus a rotating supply of freeze-dried meals and home-canned goods.

But then I read stories of folks holding a year’s worth and wonder—am I underestimating? Also, how do you factor in things like water for cooking, food fatigue, and medical diets?
