Independent Watchdog Expands Probe Into Trump Administration’s Alleged Efforts to Weaken Education Department After Senators’ Request

Investigation into Alleged Attempts to Break Down Education Department Widens

The independent body tasked with maintaining government accountability has revealed that it is broadening its investigation into the alleged moves by the current administration to dismantle significant programs within the Education Department. This comes in response to a request from several U.S. Senators.

Investigation Details

The investigation is specifically looking into whether student loan default collections were improperly transferred from the Education Department to the Treasury Department, among other interagency agreements. The government watchdog initially began its probe following a letter from Senators, including the Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee and several ranking members of various Senate Committees.

These Senators had previously received confirmation of the initial investigation into the transfer of grant programs for career and technical education, and adult education to the Labor Department. The watchdog's decision to widen its investigation implies that it has found enough preliminary evidence to warrant a more extensive examination.

Concerns Raised

According to one of the Senators, these potentially unauthorized agreements could threaten the resources students and families depend on and could undermine the country's education system. The Senator added that the investigation is a crucial step in safeguarding the programs that serve students and the rights they are granted under the law.

The Senator pledged to continue pushing back against any actions that could prevent students and schools from receiving the support they are due.

Past Actions

In the past, the administration had formalized an agreement transferring the daily management of career and technical education and adult education grant programs from the Education Department to the Labor Department. Since then, there have been nine other similar agreements, moving large parts of the Education Department to other federal agencies.

The Senators had asked the watchdog to look into the impacts of these agreements on program costs, timely access to funding, access to services, and the quality of technical assistance provided to grantees.

Confirmation of Investigation Expansion

The watchdog confirmed that it had opened an investigation into the transfer of grant programs to the Labor Department and other agencies. It announced that it is now expanding its probe in response to the Senators' request for a review of the impacts of the Education Department's interagency agreements.

It also stated that it plans to initiate additional reviews of other interagency agreements announced by the Education Department, including the controversial transfer of student loan default collections to the Treasury Department.
