Indiana Man's Sudden Death Unravels a Dark Plot
The sudden demise of Harold Allen in Freetown, Indiana, under mysterious circumstances raised no eyebrows initially. Even seasoned investigator Lieutenant Adam Nicholson didn't suspect foul play initially. Harold was known to have serious health problems, including severe gastrointestinal issues that had sent him to the hospital multiple times.
However, during a family Thanksgiving dinner, Harold's condition took a strange turn. His brother Matthew Allen noticed Harold's sudden distress. He recalls how Harold's face went numb out of the blue. Despite the family's insistence, Harold refused to seek medical help.
Harold's health steadily deteriorated in the weeks leading up to Christmas. But what was making Harold sick remained a mystery to doctors. His sudden death on the 20th of December was initially attributed to multiple serious cardiac issues, including pericarditis. His grieving wife, Marsha Allen, turned to writing to cope with her loss, publishing a book on dealing with the grief of losing a significant other.
A Shocking Discovery
However, a burglary at Marsha's house nine months later turned the case on its head. Security cameras captured two men breaking into her home, one of whom was identified as Steven White, a close friend of Marsha's daughter Ashley Jones.
Steven was arrested, and during questioning, he made an astonishing claim. He alleged that Marsha Allen was responsible for her husband's death, and that she had poisoned Harold with a root beer float.
According to Steven, Ashley had provided him with a key to Marsha's house and the combination to the safe. He also claimed that everything stolen from Marsha's house, including guns and jewelry, could be found at specific locations. Sure enough, the stolen items were found where Steven had indicated.
Investigating the Murder Allegation
Given the accuracy of Steven's information about the burglary, the investigators decided to pursue his murder allegation. Marsha Allen was called in to discuss the burglary and was confronted with the allegations against her.
Marsha vehemently denied the charges and pointed out that an autopsy and toxicology report had been conducted on Harold. However, while Marsha was left alone in the interview room, she deleted items off her phone. These deleted items were later recovered, revealing a series of incriminating text messages between Marsha and her daughter Ashley.
Revelations from the Text Messages
It became clear from their text exchanges that Marsha and Ashley were plotting to poison Harold. Texts showed them disparaging Harold and expressing eagerness for a shipment of poison to arrive.
The damning evidence in the texts led investigators to conclude that Marsha Allen had indeed poisoned her husband. The root beer float that Harold consumed, it was determined, had been laced with poison.
