Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson Calls Out Attacks on Judges

In Puerto Rico, Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson spoke strongly against the harsh words and actions directed at judges by former President Donald Trump and his supporters. During a judges' conference, she expressed her concerns about the negative impact this behavior has on American democracy.

"The attacks are not random. They seem designed to intimidate those of us who serve in this critical capacity," Jackson said. She emphasized that such threats and harassment challenge the very system of government and could damage the Constitution and the rule of law.

Although she didn't say Trump's name, she referred to him by mentioning "the elephant in the room" and criticized the aggressive language and impeachment calls aimed at federal judges who have disagreed with his policies.

Standing Strong for Justice

Justice Jackson encouraged her fellow judges to remain brave and continue their work fairly, regardless of the pressure. "I urge you to keep going, keep doing what is right for our country, and I do believe that history will vindicate your service," she stated. This message led to a standing ovation from the audience of judges and lawyers.

Her speech, lasting 18 minutes, was one of the most direct and powerful statements from any Supreme Court member in recent times. It comes after numerous judges throughout the U.S. blocked Trump's policies, citing them as clear violations of the Constitution.

Reactions to Judicial Decisions

Trump has responded strongly to these legal blocks. For instance, after U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, known for his moderate views, ruled against Trump on a deportation case, Trump labeled him a "Radical Left Lunatic" and even suggested impeachment. This reaction prompted Chief Justice John Roberts to defend the judicial process, stating that impeachment is not the correct response to disagreement over legal decisions.

Despite this, Trump's close advisers, like Stephen Miller and Elon Musk, have continued to criticize judges, sometimes using extreme language on platforms like X (formerly Twitter).

Highlighting the Pressure on Judges

Before discussing her life at the conference, Jackson took a moment to speak on the ongoing attacks judges face. "It seems as though every time I read the news or turn on the television these days, I see the affronts," she noted.

She shared her own experiences from her eight years as a district court judge, describing the intense pressure and loneliness that comes with making tough decisions in the public eye. "It can sometimes take raw courage to remain steadfast in doing what the law requires," she admitted.

Learning from History

Justice Jackson reminded her colleagues of past judges who stood firm during critical moments in American history, like the Civil Rights Movement and the Watergate scandal. She encouraged today's judges to draw strength from those examples and continue to uphold justice.

By addressing these issues head-on, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson hopes to inspire courage and commitment among judges across the country as they navigate these challenging times.
