Key Primary Races in California and Iowa Could Shape Congressional Control

Major Election Day Showdowns to Look Out for Across the Nation

On an important election day, six states across the United States are heading to the polls. The spotlight shines particularly bright on two states: California and Iowa, where hard-fought gubernatorial primary races are unfolding. Both states could pave the way for Democratic control of Congress later in the year.

California's Gubernatorial Race in Focus

California's election system is unique, allowing the two candidates with the most votes to proceed to the general election in November, regardless of their party affiliations. After the current Democratic Governor decided not to run due to term limits, the race became wide open. Over 60 candidates threw their hats in the ring, but only a small group is seen as serious contenders.

Recent shocking developments have made the race even more unpredictable. The assumed frontrunner, a former Democratic Representative, withdrew from the race due to multiple allegations of sexual misconduct. Now, the contest seems to be between the former Health and Human Services Secretary under a previous president and a billionaire philanthropist. Whoever comes out on top will face a Republican challenger in November.

New Congressional Districts in California

In response to political maneuvering in Texas, Californians approved a measure last year that allowed for the reshaping of their congressional districts. This has led to several previously Republican districts now leaning Democratic. As a result, incumbent Republicans are now reassessing their political strategies. Some of the more competitive seats have resulted in heated primaries between Democrats, giving voters the opportunity to indicate their preferred candidates.

Iowa's Gubernatorial Primary Heats Up

In Iowa, Republican voters could determine the party's nominee for the first open gubernatorial race since 2011. With five candidates on the ballot, the race is a test of the weight a former president's endorsement holds in a state where his approval rating has declined. If no candidate achieves 35% of the vote, the nominee will be chosen at a Republican convention where delegates, rather than primary voters, make the final decision.

The Republican nominee will face a tough challenge in the general election. The Democratic candidate, the current State Auditor, is popular among voters and has so far raised more funds than any other candidate for the governor's post.

Democrats Eye Iowa Senate Seat

Democrats in Iowa will select their candidate to challenge the likely Republican nominee for the Senate, who enjoys the backing of the former president. The Democratic candidates, a state Representative and a state Senator, are courting different voter bases. The Representative is targeting independent-leaning voters, while the Senator is looking to win the support of committed Democrats. Both believe they have the right message to secure a victory in November.

With three other competitive congressional races also on the ballot, Democrats in the state believe that the path to a Democratic majority in Congress goes through Iowa.

Races to Watch Beyond California and Iowa

New Jersey and Montana also have competitive races that could determine which party controls Congress. In New Jersey, four Democrats are hoping to defeat the incumbent Republican Representative, who has been notably absent from Washington due to medical issues. In Montana, two open races have become more competitive than expected due to sudden announcements by two Republicans that they will not seek re-election.

Although Montana is traditionally a Republican stronghold, an independent candidate who is outpacing both major parties in fundraising could shake things up. Meanwhile, Democrats see an opportunity to flip Montana's 1st Congressional District. Four Democrats, including a front-runner endorsed by a popular progressive Representative, are vying for the open seat.
