LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho resigns amid FBI investigation

Top School Official in Los Angeles Steps Down Amidst FBI Scrutiny

The chief executive officer of the largest school district in Los Angeles has announced his resignation. This comes in the wake of an ongoing investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), which included searches at his residence and the school district's main office.

The school district has confirmed the receipt of the resignation letter from the CEO.

In his farewell note, the departing superintendent expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the school district. He acknowledged the collective achievements made during his tenure, attributing them to the combined efforts of the students, educators, staff, and the broader community.

Details of the Investigation

Not long after the FBI executed searches at the CEO's home and the school district's offices, the district's Board of Education unanimously decided to suspend him. The suspension was to last until the conclusion of the investigation.

A statement made in March on behalf of the CEO indicated his belief in his innocence. The statement further expressed hope for a swift resolution to the investigation and his subsequent reinstatement.

Despite the ongoing investigation, no charges have been brought against the superintendent so far.

The Florida Connection

Besides the searches in Los Angeles, the FBI also conducted a search at a third location in Florida. This property was reportedly owned by a woman who had worked with an ed-tech company that had a prior contract with the school district in Los Angeles.

The company, which went bankrupt, was led by an individual who was later indicted for fraud. The superintendent had previously praised a deal with this company, which involved an AI chatbot named "Ed" to assist students. However, just three months after the technology was introduced, the school district ended their contract with the company.

Although the company's leadership faced legal trouble, the CEO maintained he had no personal involvement in the selection of the company for the school district contract.

Statement of the CEO

The CEO's statement reiterated his respect for the law and the investigative process, expressing confidence in his adherence to the law and his commitment to the best interests of the students. The statement also emphasized that, thus far, no evidence has been presented to suggest any violation of federal law on his part.

Following the FBI's search of the school district's headquarters, the district announced its full cooperation with the investigation.

The CEO, who began his term in 2022, had previously held a similar position in Miami.
