A Sneak Peek at the Upcoming Earbuds

It's no secret that a new series of earbuds are on the horizon, likely to coincide with the anticipated unveiling of a new flagship smartphone. As anticipation builds, we're getting our first glimpse at the non-functional mock-ups of both the standard and pro versions of these upcoming earbuds, which seem to be a direct response to feedback from customers who couldn't help but draw comparisons with a certain rival's product.

The images of these mock-up units are a great indicator of the upcoming earbuds' design. They validate the several leaks over the past few months, but the striking new metallic finish on the stem is a surprise. It suggests that the makers are addressing the criticism that the previous model's design was too similar to that of a well-known competitor.

Embracing a New Design

The company's previous top-of-the-line earbuds deviated from their original design, mimicking the appearance of a popular competitor's basic earbuds and their premium version. Despite minor differences - a silver color option, an unnecessary light strip - reviews repeatedly highlighted the clear resemblance to the competitor's product. This similarity threatened to overshadow the fact that these were two pairs of high-quality earbuds.

So, with the upcoming standard and pro earbuds, it appears that the company has devised a strategy to preempt any criticism. They've added a brushed silver plate to the stem's outward-facing side. This design change has been hinted at in previous renderings, but this is the first time we've had a real-life glimpse of the final product. The jury's still out on whether this new design will be a hit or miss.

Comparing the Two Models

The pro version's silver-on-black finish seems to be more appealing. This could be due to its status as a more premium product, or perhaps it's just a better photograph. The move back to a square case, breaking away from the popular flip-top design, is a nice touch. However, in comparison, the standard version of the earbuds seems less appealing, giving off a budget earbuds vibe from a few years ago.

When the new metallic plate is not in view, both earbuds still bear a resemblance to the competitor's product. However, the charging connectors and the black color on the pro version help to lessen that similarity. A final image of the standard earbuds' case back reveals the charging port and a sync button that could potentially allow users to locate their lost phone.

A Step Forward or a Step Back?

While it's clear the company is trying to differentiate its product from its competitor's, only time will tell if these design changes will resonate with consumers. Will the new metallic finish and the return to a square case be enough to set these earbuds apart? Or will consumers still see a resemblance to the competitor's product? We'll have to wait until the official launch to find out.
