Look up! The moon and Venus will stage a rare daytime disappearing act today

A Daytime Astronomical Spectacle: The Moon Masks Venus

There's an extraordinary celestial show taking place today when the moon crosses directly in front of Venus during daylight hours. This rare event, known as a daytime occultation, is one of the most remarkable and technically complex sky-gazing experiences this month.

For the majority of North America, this spectacle will take place in mid-afternoon. As long as the skies are void of clouds and are a vibrant deep blue, the probability of catching this unique event is pretty high.

Daytime Viewing: A Note of Caution

However, there's a crucial caveat: this event happens in broad daylight, between about 3:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., when the sun is still high in the sky. At the same time, the moon and Venus will be situated roughly 38 degrees away from the sun. Hence, anyone planning to use binoculars or a telescope must exercise extreme caution not to inadvertently scan across the sun, as this could lead to immediate and irreversible eye damage.

Never scan the sky during daylight with binoculars or a telescope without being absolutely certain of the sun's location. To safely observe the occultation, position your telescope in the physical shade of a building so the sun is entirely obstructed by the roofline.

What to Expect During the Occultation

The moon, during this event, will be a very thin waxing crescent, approximately 2 to 3 days old and roughly lit up by 11% to 14%. Venus, on the other hand, will be shining brightly at magnitude -4.0.

Although Venus is theoretically bright enough to be seen with the naked eye during the day if you have perfect vision and know exactly where to look, daylight tends to diminish much of the contrast. Therefore, binoculars or a telescope are the ideal tools for this instance. The crescent moon serves as an excellent celestial landmark to help locate the planet, and the optics will offer a remarkable view of Venus slipping behind the unilluminated edge of the lunar disk.

Through a telescope, observing the jagged, dark edge of the lunar crescent gradually swallow the brilliant white disk of Venus against a blue daytime sky is a sight you won't forget.

An Evening Treat: The Moon and The Beehive Cluster

If daytime sky-gazing isn't your thing, the evening sky has another marvel to offer. The waxing crescent moon will be positioned near the Beehive Cluster (M44) in the Cancer constellation.

Once the sky is totally dark, about 45 to 60 minutes post sunset, direct your gaze towards the moon. Just a few degrees apart, you'll spot a faint, fuzzy patch of light - that's the Beehive Cluster. When viewed through binoculars, it transforms into a brilliant scattering of dozens of faint blue-white stars. Spanning about the width of three full moons, both the cluster and crescent moon will fit comfortably into the same binocular field of view, making for a breathtaking sight.

The bright sunlit section of the moon will be dazzling, but the remainder of the lunar globe will be visibly glowing from sunlight reflected off Earth's oceans and clouds back onto the moon. This phenomenon, known as earthshine, gives the moon a strikingly three-dimensional appearance through binoculars.

Capture the Moment: A Quick Astrophotography Project

The moon and the Beehive Cluster also make for an excellent subject for a fast, wide-field astrophotography project. Attach a 135 mm lens to your DSLR camera and mount it on a tripod. Then, expose long enough to capture the glittering swarm of Beehive stars while ensuring the exposure is short enough to preserve the earthshine on the dark side of the lunar crescent.
