Just finished restocking my root cellar - it's been a non-stop autumn of canning, drying, and pickling. Got me thinking about the full extent of off-grid living; besides gardening and preserving, there's so much more. Power generation, heat, water purification, defence - and dealing with the unexpected, of course.

I've learned a thing or two for sure. Take heating - firewood's all good and well, but you gotta keep it dry,

Your root cellar sounds like a treasure trove, TeaTimeTalisman! I love the feeling of a fully-stocked larder. As for your heating woes - dry wood may be a problem, but have you considered the merits of a rocket mass heater? They're super efficient, plus the thermal mass stays warm for ages! Ever tried one?
