Millions to Gather in Nationwide Protest Against Current Government

It's expected that millions of American citizens will fill the streets this Saturday for a large-scale demonstration against the current administration. This protest, known as No Kings, is organized by a variety of groups including labor unions, grassroots organizations, and anti-authoritarian collectives. It's anticipated that there will be over 3,000 separate events across all 50 states, as well as in 16 other countries.

Historic Protest Predicted

Ezra Levin, one of the founding members of the organizing group, has suggested that this could be the largest protest in the history of the country. This will be the third No Kings protest; the previous one, which took place last October, saw a turnout of seven million people nationwide.

Main Event in Minnesota

The main event will be held in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. This location was chosen to highlight the citizens' opposition to the increase in Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents that occurred over the winter. The rally in St. Paul will feature several high-profile guests, including Senator Bernie Sanders, actor Jane Fonda, and musicians Bruce Springsteen and Joan Baez.

Broad Range of Participants

It's expected that a large portion of the participants will be from areas outside of major cities, including regions traditionally dominated by the Republican party. Leah Greenberg, another co-founder of the organizing group, shared this information at a recent press conference.

A Variety of Issues

Protesters are expected to join the demonstration for a variety of reasons, from opposition to ICE raids to concerns about voting rights. Sarah Parker, the executive director of a Florida advocacy group and a national coordinator for the protest, noted that increasing gas and grocery prices, coupled with an ongoing conflict in Iran, have left many Americans feeling frustrated and angry.

Emphasis on Nonviolence

The organizers of No Kings have stressed the nonviolent nature of the protest. They have implemented a strict policy against weapons, even those legally carried. Parker stated that leaders are undergoing training in de-escalation techniques. During the first No Kings protest, a volunteer “peacekeeper” tragically shot two protesters, one of whom was legally carrying a firearm.

Tensions with the Administration

The current administration has been harsh in its treatment of anti-ICE protesters, with several individuals recently found guilty of terrorism related charges following a protest at a detention facility. Further tension has arisen due to the deaths of two Minneapolis residents, who were killed by federal immigration agents while documenting their activities.

Concerns Over ICE Presence

There have been rumors of ICE agents planning to attend Saturday’s protests, which could pose a risk for undocumented and vulnerable protesters. Deirdre Schifeling, a senior officer at the American Civil Liberties Union, advised that these threats are likely intimidation tactics and directed people to the "know your rights" materials on their website.

One Step in a Bigger Movement

The organizers of No Kings have repeatedly emphasized that this protest is part of a larger effort to oppose the current administration. They stress that their work won’t end after this event. “Our third No Kings Day of Action will happen on Saturday, and the current administration will still be in office,” said Greenberg. “This is why we see No Kings as not just a day of defiance, but also a catalyst for ongoing local activism.”
