Groundbreaking Application Detects Nearby Smart Glasses

Imagine being able to know if someone in your vicinity is wearing smart glasses. With the introduction of a breakthrough app, this has now become a possibility. Smart glasses, also known as "sophisticated surveillance" tools, are often indistinguishable from regular eyewear. This can potentially cause uneasy situations where you might be unknowingly recorded.

How Does The App Work?

The innovative application, aptly referred to as "Nearby Glasses," uses Bluetooth signals to identify nearby smart glasses. The application is designed to pick up signals from Bluetooth-enabled devices, which include various wearable tech devices that are constantly recording.

Nearby Glasses operates by detecting Bluetooth signals with a unique identifier that's specific to the manufacturer of the device. Upon identifying a device that matches with known smart glasses, the app sends an alert to the user.

Moreover, users have the liberty to add their own Bluetooth identifiers to the app. This feature allows the detection of a broader spectrum of wearable technologies.

Ensuring Real-Time Scanning

To keep the app scanning continuously, users must activate a feature called foreground service. Upon activation, they can begin scanning. The app provides a debug log that displays its activity in real time.

The Motivation Behind The App

The developer of the app, Yves Jeanrenaud, refers to smart glasses as an "unbearable invasion of privacy, disrespectful of consent, and a terrible piece of technology". He was driven to create this app due to the widespread misuse and inhumane nature of smart glasses.

One of Jeanrenaud's main concerns was the decision by a certain tech giant to embed face recognition as a default feature in their smart glasses. He believes this decision could pave the way for a host of intrusive behaviors.

Jeanrenaud was inspired to create the app after learning about the misuse of smart glasses. For instance, there were instances of the glasses being used to film and harass individuals, or even worn by law enforcement during sensitive operations.

Potential Challenges

Despite its innovative approach, the app is not without its drawbacks. Jeanrenaud admits that it may produce false positives. For example, it might confuse a virtual reality headset with smart glasses and alert the user. However, virtual reality headsets are usually more visible and easier to spot.

Describing Nearby Glasses as a "dire attempt at resistance," Jeanrenaud hopes that it will provide some relief to users. He acknowledges that while the app offers a technical solution to a societal issue, the problem it addresses is unlikely to disappear soon.

Availability and Future Plans

Currently, the app is only available for Android devices. Jeanrenaud has expressed that there's demand for an iPhone version, but its development would depend on his free time and availability. He continues to add new features to the existing app.

The app's page suggests that once a device is identified, users can "respond appropriately." Jeanrenaud believes that responses could range from politely asking the smart glasses user to stop recording to more drastic measures.

A Step Towards Addressing Privacy Concerns

The advent of smart glasses has sparked discussions about privacy concerns. Many users on online forums seem to appreciate this technology solution. Some express eagerness to call out individuals using these devices for recording, while others express relief that a solution of this nature exists.

While the app may not eliminate all privacy concerns surrounding smart glasses, it certainly represents a significant step towards addressing them.
