The world is witnessing a debate on whether artificial intelligence (AI) is a job destroyer or a potent helper for employees. A framework has been launched to help people understand this technology, which is both feared and admired for its potential impact on the labor market.

The framework focuses on educating people about five basic aspects of AI:

  • The importance of understanding what AI can do
  • Learning how AI features function
  • Acquiring the skills to use AI effectively
  • Checking if AI results are accurate
  • Making sure there's responsibility for AI's results

Understanding these points is crucial for everyone – from employees and employers to politicians and the public. Surveys reveal that many people worry that AI's main goal is to replace human workers.

A Growing Fear

Over half of the people believe that AI will bring more harm than good to their daily lives, a rise by 11% since last spring. There is also a similar level of worry about the massive data centers that power this industry.

These concerns are being amplified by political campaign ads and recent major layoffs by large technology companies. These companies have announced plans to reduce their workforce, attributing the need for downsizing to AI.

One of the tech CEOs recently laid off about 700 employees, while another CEO cut off 4,000 from his company's workforce. Both cited AI advancements as the reason for these job cuts.

It seems that more layoffs are coming our way, as a global outplacement firm has indicated. Employers announced over 60,000 job cuts in March, with most of them targeting the tech sector.

AI's Role in Job Cuts

Despite the fear, it's important to note that market and economic conditions, not AI, are the leading reasons most cited for these job cuts. As tariffs take effect and geopolitical tensions threaten to cause inflation and rise in gas prices, investors are hunting for good deals in a highly volatile economy.

One reason for AI’s role in job cuts could be its capabilities; another might be efforts to alleviate shareholder concerns about the costs of building data centers. Four major tech companies are reportedly investing a whopping $650 billion into AI this year.

An expert from a consulting firm commented on the recent job cuts, saying that while layoffs might not make a huge difference in the massive costs, they could generate some cash flow.

AI as a Tool for Work

In this situation, the focus for people entering the job market should be on learning how to use these new tools. As one executive director of distance education put it, students need to know when to rely on AI, when to challenge it, and how to add human insight to machine-generated output.

Others have been echoing this sentiment for months, including a science fiction writer who warned of a situation where a human becomes a tool for the AI app, rather than a human using AI as a tool. This scenario already happened to a freelance journalist who relied on an AI to create a list of best summer reads, only to find out that ten of the fifteen books on the list didn't exist – they were just made up by the AI.
