New Museum Honors North Korean Soldiers Lost in Ukrainian Conflict
The war between Russia and Ukraine saw the involvement of many North Korean soldiers, fighting alongside Russia. To commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of these soldiers, North Korea has recently unveiled a memorial museum.
United on the Battlefield
Though the exact number of North Korean soldiers that were deployed to aid Russia remains undisclosed, it is believed that approximately 15,000 troops were sent to fight. Tragically, an estimated 2,000 of these brave men lost their lives on the battlefield.
Inauguration Ceremony
The opening ceremony of the museum took place in the capital city of Pyongyang. In attendance were high-ranking officials from both North Korea and Russia, including Kim Jong Un, the North Korean leader. Other notable attendees were Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of the Russian State Duma, and Andrei Beloussov, Russia's Defense Minister.
During the ceremony, Kim Jong Un paid his respects to the fallen soldiers by scattering soil over the remains of one soldier and laying flowers for others whose bodies were in the mortuary. Alongside Volodin and Belousov, he added his message to the guest book.
Kim's Speech and Meeting with Beloussov
In his speech, Kim Jong Un praised the fallen soldiers, stating their spirits will live on as "a symbol of the Korean people's heroism" and support the victorious endeavours of the Korean and Russian people. He applauded the joint forces for successfully countering what he referred to as a Western "hegemonic plot and military adventurism" on the Russian-Ukrainian front.
Kim Jong Un also held a separate meeting with Beloussov, during which he expressed North Korea's full support for Russia's defense of its sovereignty and security interests.
Message from Putin
Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a message, read out by Volodin during the ceremony, stating his belief that the museum "will undoubtedly be a clear symbol of the friendship and solidarity" between the two countries. Putin expressed his conviction that the comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and North Korea would continue to strengthen.
The Strategic Partnership
Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, North Korea has prioritized its alliance with Russia, providing soldiers and conventional weapons. In return, North Korea has reportedly received economic aid and other forms of assistance from Russia. This has raised concerns among South Korea, the U.S., and their allies that Russia may be transferring high-tech technologies that could boost North Korea's nuclear and missile programs.
Despite initial struggles due to lack of combat experience and unfamiliar terrain, North Korean troops were seen to gain valuable battlefield experience. They were considered instrumental to Russia's strategy of overwhelming Ukraine by deploying large numbers of soldiers into the battle for Kursk.
