Fatal Roller Coaster Incident Leads to Closures at Parks in Six States

An amusement park in Georgia closed several rides after a person died and other guests were hurt in an incident involving a roller coaster. The closure also affected similar rides at five other parks in six states.

Similar Rides Closed as a Precaution

The parks temporarily shut down nine roller coasters while the incident is investigated. The company that operates the parks said the closures were made out of caution. The Georgia park is about 15 miles northwest of Atlanta.

The details of the incident remain unclear. Officials have not said how the person died, how the other guests were injured, or what condition they are in. They have also not publicly identified the ride involved.

Police in Cobb County have opened a major crimes investigation. The park and local authorities responded to the incident, and the park operator said it is cooperating with the investigation.

Witnesses Describe a Fall

People who were at the park said they saw a man fall from a roller coaster. One witness described him striking the ride car several times. Authorities have not confirmed that account or shared further details about what happened.

Video shown by local television stations appeared to show riders leaving a coaster. The footage did not settle which ride was involved, and officials have not named it.

The park operator said it was deeply saddened by the incident and was offering support to affected guests and workers. The chair of the county’s board of commissioners also expressed sympathy for the family of the person who died. She said the family had been notified.

A Major Attraction in the County

The amusement park draws visitors from across the southeastern United States and is an important part of the county’s tourism industry, the county leader said. She also recognized that guests and workers may be struggling with the event, which happened at a place where many families have made happy memories.

The roller coaster seen in some video is a large attraction that opened in 2006. It rises about 200 feet and can reach speeds of around 70 miles per hour. A full ride lasts about three and a half minutes and includes sharp turns and steep hills.

Other Recent Roller Coaster Concerns

The Georgia incident came less than two weeks after a theme park in Southern California said it would retire a well-known coaster. Lawsuits have alleged that the ride caused serious brain injuries. The park had also settled a wrongful-death lawsuit brought by the family of a 22-year-old man who died after riding it in 2022.

In another case, a 32-year-old man died last year after riding a fast coaster at a Florida theme park. The medical finding was that he died from injuries caused by a blunt impact. His death was ruled accidental.

Investigation Continues

For now, the Georgia park’s investigation is focused on the fatal incident and the injuries. Officials have not released a cause or explained how the event unfolded. The nine similar rides remain closed as the review continues.

  • One person died in the incident at a Georgia amusement park.
  • Several other people were injured, but their conditions have not been shared.
  • Nine similar coasters at parks in six states were temporarily closed.
  • Police are investigating, and the ride involved has not been officially identified.
