Philippines Begins Recovery After Deadly 7.8-Magnitude Earthquake Kills Dozens

Recovery Efforts Underway Following Devastating Earthquake in the Philippines

Just after midnight, amid the ruins of a collapsed grocery store, a rescue team discovered a body. The sight was devastating for the family, but it provided painful closure. They now had someone to mourn.

Rene Baliong, who led the search and rescue group, has been tirelessly sifting through the rubble in General Santos City on Mindanao, the nation's second-most populous island. The devastation was caused by a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake that not only triggered a tsunami warning but also claimed the lives of at least 55 people.

Endless Rescue Operations

The rescue group worked around the clock, their morale uplifted when they managed to save a victim on Tuesday. However, several people are still unaccounted for, with over 1,120 reported injured and more than 45,000 displaced. The majority of those displaced were people who fled following the tsunami warning in the southern region of the country.

Earthquake's Aftermath

The earthquake, the strongest since 1976, was triggered by movement in the Cotabato Trench, a deep sea depression. The aftermath was devastating, with landslides burying homes and killing 18 people in the mountainside town of Glan. In General Santos City, nearby, building collapses resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people.

Nearly 19 major commercial structures in the city, including a mall and a hotel, were damaged, and over 19,000 homes were affected. Government officials are trying to provide food and clean water after the city’s water pipes burst during the earthquake. With large malls closed, finding basic necessities has become a challenge for the locals.

Mental Health Impact

Besides the physical damage, the earthquake has left a significant psychological impact on the locals, especially the children. The earthquake occurred just as students were returning from their summer break. Many students watched their school buildings shake as they gathered to sing the national anthem. Ten schools were damaged and 6,000 remain closed for safety evaluations.

Organizations are providing mental health support and hot meals, assisting in rescue operations, and assessing the impact on people’s livelihoods. The earthquake will likely affect jobs and decrease tourism in the region.

Future Challenges

The region's recovery efforts could be further complicated by the predicted El Niño phenomenon, which might bring floods and severe dry spells. The main concern is for agricultural production, as the area is one of the top rice-producing regions in the Philippines. Coconut production, which supports the economy in some parts of Sarangania, may also be adversely affected.

With abnormal weather conditions and vulnerability caused by damaged infrastructure, the region is preparing for tough times ahead. The process of rebuilding after the earthquake will certainly not be easy.
