The surgery turned out to be a historic success. Andrews lived for 271 days with the pig kidney functioning inside his body. During this entire nine-month period, he did not need to undergo dialysis, which is a time-consuming and exhausting treatment that filters the blood when kidneys fail.

This achievement set a new record for the longest time a living human has survived without dialysis after receiving a pig kidney. More importantly, the procedure proved that a temporary animal organ can safely keep a patient alive while they wait for a human organ to become available. The Growing Need for Transplants

The success of this procedure comes at a critical time. There is a severe shortage of available organs for people who need them. Some key facts about the current transplant crisis include:

  • The vast majority of these patients are waiting specifically for a kidney.

Initially, medical researchers believed it would take at least a decade before pig kidney transplants would become a widely available treatment option. However, due to rapid progress and successful cases like Andrews', experts now believe this technology could become a viable option in five years or less.
