Powerful earthquake hits Philippines, killing at least 15

Deadly Tremor Shakes Up Philippines, Claiming At Least 15 Lives

The Philippines was rocked by a severe earthquake that has resulted in the deaths of at least 15 individuals, obliterated structures, and set off tsunami warnings throughout Asia.

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.8, occurred near the island of Mindanao early in the morning. This significant tremor was then succeeded by over an hour's worth of aftershocks.

Widespread Damage and Aftershocks

Of the affected areas, General Santos, a city in southern Mindanao with a population of around 722,000 people, bore the brunt of the damage. The city, situated in the southern region of Soccsksargen, was subject to the event's most potent force, as per the local seismic activity monitoring agency.

Video footage published on social media displayed a three-story building, which accommodated a popular fast-food restaurant, falling in a cloud of rubble and dust, startling those who were witnessing the scene. Numerous other images portrayed extensive damage to various buildings, with shattered windows and collapsed roofs being common sights.

Emergency Response

A police spokesperson reported to a local radio station that a significant portion of the city's St Elizabeth Hospital had incurred serious damage. This necessitated the evacuation of patients and medical staff, who had to operate outside the primary medical facility temporarily.

Mary Ann Blanco Rhudy, a Catholic nun working at a local university in General Santos, described her experience as she was on her way to the university when the earthquake struck. "The vehicles on the road were maneuvering unpredictably. I consider myself fortunate that they didn’t collide with each other," she said. "The trees lining the roadside were also violently shaking."

She also mentioned that some of the university's buildings had partially collapsed.

Government Actions and Tsunami Warnings

In response to the disaster, the nation's president activated emergency agencies, including the Office of Civil Defense and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Furthermore, he ordered the closure of schools in the affected regions.

The state-run news agency reported that the closure affected nearly 3.2 million students and 128,000 teachers and personnel on what was supposed to be the country's first day of school. "The safety of our children is of utmost priority," the president emphasized.

Tsunami alerts were issued and later withdrawn in various Asian countries, including the Philippines and Indonesia. However, a tsunami advisory remained active for the southern coast and remote islands of Japan, where residents were advised to steer clear of river mouths and coastal areas until further notice.
