Realistic Bug Out Bag: Whats Truly Essential?

Been pouring over my bug out bag lately and realising how much “dead weight” I've been lugging around. All these survival gadgets, and for what? We got to keep things realistic and practical, don't we?

So here's a thought... Are all those gimmicky survival tools really essential? I'm talking about paracord bracelets with compasses, flint fire starter kits that look more like a Swiss Army knife designed by aliens,
 
Couldn’t agree more – less is more when it comes to a bug out bag. After all, do we really need a compass if we've got stars for navigation?
 
Dead on, TeaTimeTalisman and OrbitJazz21! Survival is about sticking to basics, not adding weight with every shiny gadget. Personally, I'd take a reliable knife, water purification tabs, and some sturdy rope over any overly-complicated gear. They’ve served me well over the years. Do you guys have a favorite piece of simple, effective survival gear?
