Russian Missile Strikes Kill at Least 25, Injure Dozens in Kyiv After Zelenskyy Warns of Massive Attack

Devastating Strikes on Ukraine's Capital Result in Heavy Casualties

Ukraine's capital city, Kyiv, was subjected to an intense strike that resulted in a minimum of 25 fatalities and numerous injuries. The city was rattled by loud booms that lasted several hours, following a large-scale attack involving ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as drones.

The city's buildings and civilian infrastructure bore the brunt of the assault. Kyiv's residents were forced to seek refuge in metro stations, following an advisory from their President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other authorities, who had forecasted the strike.

Attack on Kyiv: The Aftermath

The assault resulted in the death of 25 people in Kyiv, while at least 85 others sustained injuries, as reported by city military officials. Tymur Tkachenko, who is in charge of the Kyiv City Military Administration, reported damage to approximately 30 locations throughout the city. The primary targets were residential buildings and civilian infrastructure, while nearly 20 residential buildings across the city were affected, according to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.

Emergency services were stretched thin, with close to 500 personnel and 100 specialized vehicles, including a helicopter, deployed to manage the fallout of the attack.

Call For Enhanced Air Defenses

Andrii Sybiha, the Foreign Minister, urged Ukraine's allies to bolster the nation's air defenses. He described the attack on Kyiv as a "night of horror" and implored partners not to delay the provision of air defense systems and missiles. Sybiha also hinted at a potential rise in the death toll due to the ongoing rescue operations.

President Zelenskyy had earlier cautioned about a possible "massive strike" and had cut short his visit to Dublin, where he was scheduled to attend the start of Ireland’s six-month tenure of the E.U. presidency.

Escalation of Attacks and the Right to Self-Defense

In recent times, the attacks on Kyiv have been escalating, even as Ukraine's own drone campaign against Russian military sites and energy facilities led to fuel shortages and disrupted supply chains within Russia. Sybiha firmly rejected any attempts to rationalize Russian attacks as retaliation for Ukraine's long-range strikes, stressing that Ukraine was merely exercising its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the U.N. Charter, with Russia being the aggressor.

The Mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, encouraged the citizens to remain in shelters due to the relentless "furious enemy attack". He also reported that a paramedic was critically injured in the Shevchenkivskyi district, where a hotel and two five-story residential buildings sustained damage.

Residential Areas Caught in the Crossfire

In the Desnianskyi district, a nine-story residential building was severely damaged, leaving people trapped inside. Rescue teams were dispatched to the scene. In the Holosiivskyi district, a fire ignited on the roof of a 16-story building. Meanwhile, in the Sviatoshynskyi district, two private residences caught fire, with people trapped under the debris in one of the buildings.

Following a strike, six levels of a nine-story building in the Darnytskyi district collapsed and another five-story residential building was damaged. The emergency services reported damage to a 16-story building and private residences in the area.

Widespread Damage Across Districts

The attack also partially destroyed a residential building in the Desnianskyi district and started fires near residential buildings in two locations in the Pecherskyi district. A fire also broke out near an administrative building in the Solomianskyi district. Damage was also reported in the Obolonskyi and Podilskyi districts. The head of the Kyiv Regional Administration, Mykola Kalashnyk, confirmed damage in five regional districts, with three people sustaining injuries in the Bucha district.
