Smoke Fills the Sky in Perm Region Following Alleged Ukrainian Attack on Oil Pipeline
Reports have emerged of a thick smoke cloud covering the Perm region of Russia. The black smoke is said to be the result of an alleged attack by Ukrainian drones on a facility believed to be part of the oil pipeline infrastructure.
Following the incident, the Governor of the Perm region, Dmitry Makhonin, confirmed that a fire had broken out due to a drone strike, although he did not disclose the specific facility that had been targeted. The Governor also assured that all personnel at the site were safely evacuated, and no one was injured.
Suspected Target: Transneft Oil Pumping Station
Despite the lack of official confirmation, speculation in the Ukrainian media suggests that the target of the attack might have been a Transneft oil pumping station.
Another Strike in Orenburg Region
Another drone attack reportedly took place in the Orenburg region, which borders northern Kazakhstan. This time, the target was said to be the Orsknefteorgsintez refinery located in the city of Orsk, approximately 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) east of Ukraine.
Orenburg region's Governor, Yevgeny Solntsev, revealed that four drones were intercepted while attempting to target "several industrial sites", though he did not disclose more details about the incident. It is noteworthy that the Orsknefteorgsintez refinery, which has an annual processing capacity of 6.6 million metric tons of oil, has been attacked before in October and November.
Escalating Attacks amid Global Energy Crisis
The recent drone strikes are part of a growing trend as Ukraine intensifies its attacks on Russia's oil and gas infrastructure. The aim is to cut off Kremlin's energy revenues, especially with the ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier this week, Ukrainian drones allegedly attacked and set a Rosneft oil refinery ablaze in the southern port town of Tuapse. This marks the third time the refinery has been targeted this month, causing the evacuation of nearby residents.
Authorities confirmed that the fire at the Tuapse refinery was extinguished, thanks to the efforts of hundreds of emergency responders who were deployed to combat the inferno.
These escalating attacks occur at a crucial time for the global energy market. Oil prices are nearing last month’s high levels due to stalled peace talks between the United States and Iran.
Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, accused Ukraine of worsening the global oil crisis with its continued attacks on oil export hubs. At the time of reporting, June Brent crude contracts were trading above $114 per barrel.
