Getting a good discussion started is definitely what we need on this topic. Long-term food security is always on my mind, especially with how unpredictable things have gotten lately. For me, a mix of gardening, canning, and small livestock (like a few rabbits or chickens) has worked best. Rabbits don’t take much space and produce quickly, and the grandkids love helping with the garden—teaching them skills they’ll need too.

Curious if anyone’s tried indoor hydroponics on a budget? I started one last winter for herbs and lettuce, and it’s surprisingly low maintenance once you get the hang of it. Not a replacement for outdoor crops, but it keeps greens on the table when the weather isn’t cooperating. Maybe someone else has tips for bug-proofing root cellars?
