Garden’s my main plan, with enough variety that there’s always something producing (squash, beans, kale, carrots—especially root veggies since they store well). I’ve stocked up on canning supplies for ages, so every summer I put up jars of tomatoes, jams, beans, and soups for the off-season. Dehydrated fruit and veggies have saved me from more than one bland winter meal too.

Chickens are a huge help if you’ve got the space; even just a few birds keep eggs coming, and if I needed to, I could cull for meat. I also keep a decent supply of dry goods like rice, pasta, and oats vacuum-sealed in buckets with bay leaves to keep bugs out. Sprouting seeds indoors is another trick—fresh greens
