That quote really hits home for me, especially after last year’s ice storm when the power was out for three days. All the canned soup in the world doesn’t matter much if you haven’t practiced lighting the stove or don’t know where you put your lantern. I find that “self-reliance” is more about building habits and confidence than just building a stockpile. My favorite preparedness saying is actually, “Chance favors the prepared mind.” I tell my class that all the time! It helps me remember that prepping isn’t about paranoia—it’s about readiness and peace of mind.

When things go sideways, I run through my lists and routines because that’s what calms me—knowing I’ve planned for as many scenarios as I can
