Japan to Play Host to Advanced Chip Production

The leader in contract chip manufacturing, headquartered in Taiwan, has unveiled its plans to produce state-of-the-art 3-nanometre chips in Kumamoto, Japan. The company's CEO announced this development recently, and local media suggests the investment will total around $17 billion. This move comes as the company aims to satisfy the rapidly growing demand for AI chips.

The company, which is a major supplier to various AI chip companies, currently manufactures its most advanced chips in Taiwan. Previous expansion plans within Japan were centered around less advanced technologies.

Japan: A New Hub for High-End Chip Production

This announcement positions Japan as a fresh hotspot for the production of high-tier 3-nanometre chips. These chips are popular in high-performance computing and AI servers. The chipmaking leader plans to initiate the production of these chips at its second production facility in Arizona by 2027.

The surge in AI technology has been profitable for the company, setting it apart from its competitors in Asia.

"We believe this new facility will further contribute to local economic growth and, most importantly, form a foundation for Japan's AI business," said the company's CEO during a meeting with Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Additionally, the CEO mentioned ongoing conversations with Japanese customers and partners about future collaboration in various sectors crucial to the AI industry.

Prime Minister Takaichi acknowledged the importance of 3-nanometre chips for economic security.

The company confirmed its intention to utilize 3nm process technology for production at its second Japanese facility to meet the strong demand driven by AI.

Investment and Support

Local media reported early on that the investment could reach $17 billion. The company did not comment on the speculated investment figure.

The Japanese government, which previously provided financial support for the company to expand capacity in Kyushu, is contemplating further backing for this new investment plan.

Originally, the company planned to invest $12.2 billion on 6-12 nanometre chipmaking capacity at its second facility in Kyushu. However, discussions about modifications to this plan with Japan's government are now taking place.

During an earnings call in January, the company reported that construction of its second Japanese facility has commenced. They stated, "the technologies and ramp schedule will be based on our customers' need and market conditions."

Future of Chip Production in Japan

Japan is also heavily supporting a domestic chip production venture called Rapidus, which will manufacture cutting-edge chips on the northern island of Hokkaido. The government has decided that the chips produced by these two companies will serve different purposes and will not compete with each other.

Chips are vital for various industries, including electronics, automotive, and defense. As such, securing access to chip production has become a top priority for governments worldwide.
