Astronauts Complete Challenging Spacewalk to Repair Station Communications

Two astronauts successfully completed a major repair job outside the space station, restoring a vital communication link back to Earth. Working high above our planet, the pair replaced a broken antenna dish during a planned spacewalk. The successful repair means the station once again has a reliable backup system for sending video and voice messages home.

The astronauts who performed the task, Anil Menon and Sophie Adenot, worked closely together to swap out the old, broken equipment with a fresh spare. This mission required careful planning, physical strength, and smooth teamwork between the crew in space and the support team on the ground.

Why the Antenna Needed to Be Replaced

The space station relies on special antennas to talk to Earth. These devices are called Space-to-Ground Antennas, and they have a very important job. They must constantly move and aim at tracking satellites that orbit high above the station. These satellites then pass the signals down to ground control.

The trouble started when one of these antennas stopped working properly. It lost its ability to track the communication satellites, which made it unusable. For months, the station had to rely on just one working antenna to send and receive voice calls and critical data. While the single antenna kept things running, it meant there was no backup plan if that second unit also failed.

In space travel, having a backup is incredibly important. Engineers call this system redundancy. By replacing the broken dish, the crew restored this safety net, ensuring that communication with Earth will not be lost even if one system experiences a problem.

How the Spacewalkers Did It

Replacing a large antenna in space is a complex, multi-step process that took two separate spacewalks to complete. During an earlier trip outside the station, the two astronauts had already disconnected and removed the broken dish, placing it in a temporary storage spot.

For the main installation job, the crew used different methods to move around the outside of the station:

  • Riding the robotic arm: Menon attached himself to the end of the station's long robotic arm. The arm carried him and the heavy spare antenna through space to the work site.
  • Climbing the handrails: Adenot moved by pulling herself along the outside of the station using metal handrails. She met her partner at the work area to help guide the new antenna into place.

Together, they carefully mounted the new dish onto a structure known as the Z-1 truss. They connected the power and data cables to make sure the station could control the new device. Once the new antenna was secure, they retrieved the old, broken unit from its temporary resting place. Menon carried the broken dish over to a permanent storage platform on the right side of the station's main framework, where it will remain out of the way.

A Happy Celebration in Orbit

After hours of hard work, the ground support team tested the new antenna. When they saw that the system was functioning properly, the mood turned joyful. An astronaut working at ground control, Anne McClain, decided to celebrate the success with a creative song.

Using the radio, she sang a playful version of a classic pop song, changing the lyrics to celebrate the crew's hard work. Her song thanked the astronauts for saving the station's video connection. The spacewalkers could be heard laughing through their helmets, expressing their gratitude to the entire team on Earth for helping them complete the difficult and time-sensitive task.

The Spacewalk by the Numbers

This mission was a major milestone for both the space program and the individual astronauts involved. Here are some of the key facts and figures from the successful repair mission:

  • Duration of the spacewalk: The entire job lasted exactly six and a half hours, starting in the morning and finishing in the afternoon.
  • Total station spacewalks: This was the 283rd spacewalk dedicated to building, maintaining, and upgrading the space station.
  • Astronaut milestones: This was Menon's third time working in open space, bringing his total spacewalking time to 19 hours and 20 minutes. For Adenot, it was her second spacewalk, raising her total time in the vacuum of space to 12 hours and 53 minutes.
  • A historic achievement: Adenot made history during these missions by becoming the fifth citizen and the very first woman from her home country of France to walk in space.
  • Yearly progress: This was the sixth spacewalk conducted at the station during the current year, and the third for this specific crew group. It also marked the 98th time astronauts used this particular model of spacesuit to work outside the station.

With the new antenna fully installed and tested, the crew can continue their scientific research knowing that their connection to the ground is stronger and safer than before.
