Fatal Accident at Major New York Airport
A tragic event unfolded at one of New York's prominent airports when a plane from Montreal collided with a ground vehicle. The incident led to the unfortunate loss of two lives and a temporary halt in the airport's operations.
Details About the Incident
The plane, which was returning from Montreal, was landing when it unexpectedly hit a ground vehicle. As a result of the crash, most flights had to be rerouted and the airport temporarily shut down.
Injuries and Casualties
The accident caused a significant number of injuries, with 41 people reported hurt. According to the airport's executive director, 32 of these individuals were discharged from medical facilities on the day following the incident. However, nine individuals were still receiving treatment for their serious injuries. The injured individuals consisted of passengers, crew members, and the two officers who were in the fire truck that was struck.
Investigations Launched
The aircraft, a regional partner's plane, collided with a fire truck on the runway as the vehicle was attending to a separate incident. The incident happened late Sunday night. The plane was carrying 76 people, including four crew members.
The plane reportedly hit the vehicle at a speed of 24 miles per hour. The airport was then closed to allow for emergency response and to begin an extensive investigation into the incident.
Flight Restrictions and Delays
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a stop order for all departures to the affected airport because of the emergency. The closure was expected to last at least until early Monday morning, with a high probability of extension. There was also a warning that the airport might remain closed until late Monday evening.
Investigative Team at the Scene
The National Transportation Safety Board dispatched a 'go team' to the site to conduct a thorough investigation into the collision. Meanwhile, incoming flights were diverted to other airports or returned to their original departure points.
The major transport hub in Queens warned locals to expect cancellations, road closures, traffic delays, and the presence of emergency personnel. They also urged people to use alternate routes.
Previous Disruptions at the Airport
The incident occurred at a time when the airport was already dealing with flight disruptions due to adverse weather conditions. Passengers were also experiencing extended wait times at security checkpoints due to staffing shortages caused by a lapse in federal funding.
The airport is the third busiest in New York, serving 33.5 million passengers in a previous year.
Recent Air Crashes
There have been other fatal air accidents in the US in recent years. In one particularly tragic event near Washington, DC, a passenger jet and an army helicopter collided, resulting in 67 fatalities.
