Immigrant Visa Issuance Paused for 75 Countries by U.S.

The U.S. government recently made a decision to halt the issuance of immigrant visas to people from 75 nations. The decision was made due to worries that these immigrants might become dependent on public support in the future.

The government stated that immigrants from these specific countries are causing a strain on public resources, which is unacceptable. This list consists of both friends and foes of the U.S., as well as several major tourist destinations.

List of Affected Countries

The countries that have been affected by this decision have been grouped by region. They include:

  • The Americas: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Dominica, Grenada, Guatemala, Haiti, Jamaica, Nicaragua, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Uruguay
  • Europe: Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia
  • Asia-Pacific: Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Fiji, Georgia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Lebanon, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Syria, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Yemen
  • Africa: Algeria, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, The Gambia, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda

Impact on Tourist Visas

It is important to note that this decision does not impact tourist visas. The suspension will remain in effect until the government is confident that the wealth of the American people will not be drained by new immigrants.

This new decision is a continuation of several visa restrictions that have been implemented recently. For instance, a pause was placed on diversity visas, a program that annually allows up to 55,000 immigrants from nations with low immigration rates to the U.S. to enter the country.

Implications for Existing Immigration Visas

Existing immigration visas are not affected by this policy. However, previously awarded immigration visas are currently under review.

A high-ranking government official stated that a thorough examination of every immigrant from every affected country is being conducted. The goal is to prevent the American people from bearing the cost of irresponsible resettlement policies of the past.

Those who hold immigrant visas and have been given permanent resident cards, often referred to as "Green Cards," are eligible for certain types of public aid. But, there is a five-year waiting period after getting this status before they can receive several benefits, such as Medicaid, Medicare and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the food stamp program.

Visa Revocations

Furthermore, the government revoked more than 100,000 visas, including those from tourists who overstayed their visa periods, as well as some 8,000 student and 2,500 specialized worker visa holders for criminal offenses ranging from driving under the influence to theft.
