"Ukraine's Zelenskyy proposes Putin meeting on ending war"

Zelenskyy Suggests Face-to-Face Meeting with Putin to Resolve Conflict

In a recent public statement, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, expressed his willingness to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. Zelenskyy hopes that a direct, personal discussion might finally put an end to the ongoing warfare between their nations.

"Ukraine is prepared to declare a full ceasefire for the duration of our talks," Zelenskyy stated in his public address.

Zelenskyy's Direct Appeal to Putin

This message marks one of the rare occasions where Zelenskyy has extended a direct invitation to Putin, amidst the full-scale conflict initiated by Russia. Zelenskyy noted that the Russian public is growing weary of the ongoing strife. He further cautioned that Ukraine will not cease its defense efforts unless Putin personally decides to conclude the conflict.

Putin’s Stance on the War

On the other hand, Putin claims that Russia maintains a superior position in the war. He recently addressed leaders of international organizations at an economic conference, stating that Russian forces continue to make progress along the entire frontline.

He further asserted that Russia has total command over certain eastern regions of Ukraine that were unlawfully seized in the recent past. Independent analysis has confirmed Putin’s claims, with a noted university project estimating that Russia also controls a significant portion of other disputed Ukrainian regions.

Reality of Russian Advances

Despite Putin's declarations, the actual progress of Russian forces in eastern Ukraine seems to have hit a roadblock. The Ukrainian army, equipped with drones, has managed to stall the advancing Russian troops.

Meanwhile, Russia has escalated its long-distance missile and drone attacks, leading to multiple Ukrainian casualties in various cities. Recent data from a university project indicates that for the first time since late 2023, Russia experienced a net loss of territorial control in Ukraine during the months of March and April.

The Human Cost of the Conflict

Estimates from Western governments and think tanks reveal that approximately 30,000 Russian soldiers are losing their lives every month in Ukraine. The Ukrainian government has chosen not to disclose their own military casualty figures regularly.

The NATO Secretary General recently warned young Russians of the high likelihood of injury or death if they choose to participate in the war.

Putin's Perspective on 'Compromise'

Despite his claims of readiness to negotiate a peaceful resolution with Ukraine, Putin has shown no inclination to retreat from his demands. These include the complete relinquishment of the Donbas region by Ukraine.

Putin referred to certain 'compromises' agreed upon during a summit with the US President, which included Ukraine surrendering its NATO aspirations and accepting Russian sovereignty over Crimea.

"The Ukrainian side must also agree to these compromises. Then the conflict will quickly come to a natural conclusion," Putin stated.

Upon being questioned about Zelenskyy's letter, the Kremlin spokesperson mentioned that Putin hadn’t read it yet. He further added that Zelenskyy is welcome to visit Moscow anytime.

After several rounds of negotiations led by the US failed to bring any progress, the US administration has mostly withdrawn from mediating the conflict and has reduced its direct military support to Ukraine. However, the US President expressed his support for a meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin, stating, "I think it would be great if they met. They should ... get it done."
