Revealed: New Video Evidence in Attempt on President's Life
A previously unseen video has been unveiled, illustrating the moment a gunman tried to breach the security at a high-profile dinner event with the alleged intent of attacking the U.S. President.
The Video's Revelations
The video, which was made public by a high-ranking legal advocate in the nation's capital, has spurred rumors that a protective service officer might have been hit by a bullet from one of his own team members during the suspect's attempt to bypass the security detail.
However, the legal advocate firmly stated, "There is no evidence the shooting was the result of friendly fire."
Previously, it was suggested that the officer was hit in his bullet-proof vest, but it was not confirmed whether the bullet originated from the suspect's firearm.
Disputing Friendly Fire Claims
The Director of the protective service, along with the President, refuted the idea that the officer was mistakenly shot by a fellow officer. The Director stated that the officer was shot at "point-blank range" by the suspect as he attempted to bypass the security setup close to the dinner venue.
"Our officer heroically returned fire," the Director stated, mentioning that the officer fired five rounds in response.
Similarly, the President dismissed the friendly fire theory, declaring, "They said it wasn't friendly fire. It wasn't us."
An official from law enforcement confirmed that an investigation determined that the protective service officer was not hit by friendly fire.
Revelations from the Video
The extensive video, which runs for nearly six minutes, shows a group of federal officers disassembling metal detectors at the security checkpoint. They were standing casually when the suspect seemingly burst through, armed with a long gun.
In the video, the suspect is seen brandishing his firearm at the officer in question while trying to dash through the checkpoint. It is unclear, however, if the suspect fired his weapon at that time.
The armed man is shown suddenly appearing from a doorway and sprinting toward the unsuspecting officers. Only the officer who was allegedly shot by the suspect had his firearm drawn before the suspect ran past them.
The officer is seen firing at the suspect at least three times in the video. However, it was confirmed that the gunman was not hit during the attack.
The video also captures the suspect "scoping out the area" as he paced back and forth in a hallway at the event's hotel a day before the dinner. He was also briefly seen entering the hotel gym.
The Director stated that the distance from the metal detectors to the podium where the President was seated was only 355 feet.
The Suspect's Current Status
The 31-year-old suspect was apprehended and detained in a chaotic struggle with security personnel, a scene not captured in the released video.
Earlier this week, he was accused of the attempted assassination of the U.S. President, a charge that carries a potential life sentence if he is found guilty.
The suspect recently agreed to remain in custody while his case is being processed. He did not immediately challenge the prosecutors' claims that he poses a threat to the public and should stay in jail, as his lawyer stated during a court hearing.
