Tragic Accident in Virginia Results in Five Fatalities, Including a Family of Four
A tragic accident in Virginia claimed the lives of five people, including a family of four from Massachusetts who were on their way to a family wedding. They were carrying with them a load of homemade desserts for the wedding celebrations.
The family members, identified as Dmitri and Ecaterina Doncev, along with their two children, Emily and Mark, will be mourned during the wedding ceremony.
Details of the Devastating Crash
The Doncev family fell victim to a horrific chain-reaction crash that was initiated by a bus colliding with multiple vehicles. The vehicles had slowed down due to a work zone on Interstate 95 in Stafford County. The bus rammed into a large SUV, which further collided with the vehicle carrying the Doncev family. Priscilla Mafalda, 25, from Worcester, Massachusetts, traveling in the SUV, also lost her life in the accident.
Besides the fatalities, several other people were injured in the crash. While most of them were discharged after treatment, one victim was reported to be in critical condition.
Bus Driver Faces Charges
The driver of the bus, 48-year-old Jing S. Dong from Staten Island, New York, has been accused of two counts of involuntary manslaughter, with likely additional charges to follow. The local prosecutor's office reported that Dong was apprehended and will remain in custody while receiving treatment for his injuries at a hospital.
The initial court appearance for Dong will be scheduled post his discharge from the hospital. Until then, he will be held without bond, as a magistrate found ample probable cause to believe that Dong's driving was "criminally negligent".
There is currently no information about whether Dong has legal representation. His case is yet to appear in the state's online court records.
In-Depth Investigation Underway
The National Transportation Safety Board has commenced an investigation into the accident. Preliminary findings suggest that the bus was moving at a high speed. The severity of the collision indicates minimal braking, if any, before the accident.
The bus was transporting passengers from New York to North Carolina. The language proficiency of the driver, who is a native of China, will also be a part of the investigation.
Remembering the Doncev Family
Dmitri Doncev, 45, was a nurse at a local medical center, while Ecaterina Doncev, 44, was a hairstylist. The couple, originally from Moldova, moved to the U.S. in 2008 and settled in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Ecaterina had spent several days preparing desserts for the family wedding.
The Doncevs were traveling in separate vehicles with Dmitri's brother, Iuri, to South Carolina for the wedding. They got separated at some point during the journey. Dmitri told his brother to carry on and that he would catch up. The family started worrying when Dmitri did not arrive at the destination around the expected time and wasn’t picking up the phone.
The tragic accident has brought immense sorrow to the family and the community.
