West Virginia Town Fires Entire Police Force After Chief Resigns Amid Evidence Room Tampering Allegations

Small Town Dismisses Entire Police Department Following Chief's Resignation and Allegations of Evidence Room Tampering

A small town in West Virginia has been embroiled in a controversy following the unexpected dismissal of its entire police department. This decision was made shortly after the resignation of the police chief, leading to public outrage, accusations of governmental overreach, and increasing calls for transparency.

The local police department announced on social media that they had been relieved from duty by the town mayor and city council. The post expressed their gratitude for the support and trust from the community during their service, saying it was an honor to protect and serve the town.

The Surprise Resignation of the Police Chief

Residents were shocked as the news came just months after the department had proudly announced the appointment of a new police chief. The new chief, a graduate of the West Virginia State Police Academy with a degree in criminal justice, was to rebuild and strengthen the department.

However, less than seven months into his role, the new chief abruptly resigned. The department assured residents that the police operations would continue, with a sergeant taking charge of the department.

The Police Department's Unexpected Dismissal

Shortly after the chief's resignation, the entire police department was dismissed. A letter written by the former chief before his resignation gave his account of why he stepped down. In the letter, he claimed that he was called into a private meeting after a new town council took office, where he was told that a council member would directly supervise the police department and make operational changes.

He opposed these directives, believing they violated the laws governing municipal police departments in West Virginia. When he tried to discuss these changes, he was told, "If I give you a directive you follow it... I am in charge and what I say goes." He described this as creating a hostile work environment, leading to his resignation.

In his letter, the former chief also expressed concerns about a lack of transparency at the town hall, which was a major complaint from town residents. He chose to resign so that these issues could be aired publicly, hoping to finally give residents the transparency they were seeking.

Alleged Break-in of the Evidence Room

After the dismissal of the police force, the former sergeant claimed that the police evidence room had been tampered with. He alleged that town officials had discussed conducting an inventory of the department without the presence of police officers. Furthermore, he claimed that a council member admitted to taking a set of police keys.

Following his accusation of town officials entering the evidence room, he and the other remaining officer were immediately dismissed. The former sergeant stated his intention to seek whistleblower protections.

Public Outcry and Petition for Reinstatement

Following these events, a resident started an online petition urging the town council to reinstate the former police chief. The petition argued that the chief had been forced to resign due to overreach by the new town council.

The petition asked town leaders to reconsider the circumstances surrounding the resignation, restore public confidence through transparency, and reinstate the former chief. The organizers encouraged residents to attend a town council meeting to express their concerns. However, the meeting was later canceled due to "a lack of sufficient information regarding items listed under unfinished business," which only added to residents' questions.

Continued Law Enforcement Despite the Dismissal

Despite the dismissal of the local police force, the sheriff's office confirmed that they would continue responding to calls in the town, ensuring that residents would still receive law enforcement services.

However, town officials have yet to publicly explain why the entire department was relieved of duty or respond to the allegations raised by the former officers. Questions regarding the authority of municipal officials over police department operations under state law remain unanswered.
