Other desert cities also felt the intense heat. Places like Las Vegas and El Centro, California, came very close to breaking their own daily temperature records. Farther north, the heat wave stretched all the way into Montana. The cities of Great Falls and Helena both went past their previous daily temperature records as the hot air moved across the region.

Extremely hot weather is one of the most dangerous natural hazards people face. When temperatures stay high for several days in a row, the danger increases. This is because the human body does not get a chance to cool down, especially if the air remains warm and humid overnight.

Wildfires Force Evacuations in Washington State
While the Southwest sweltered, the Pacific Northwest faced a different kind of emergency. Extremely dry ground combined with strong, gusty winds created perfect conditions for wildfires to spark and spread rapidly. This led to a rare and highly dangerous wildfire warning for the region.
Dozens of fires had already been burning in the area for days, but the windy weather caused a sudden surge in fire activity. Near Spokane, Washington, a new blaze called the Old Trails fire started around midday. Fueled by the wind, the fire exploded in size, burning through more than 2,300 acres in just five hours. The rapid spread of the flames forced local residents to evacuate their homes immediately to stay safe.
The Science Behind the Heat Wave
The intense heat wave was caused by a large area of high pressure that sat over the region. In weather terms, a high-pressure system acts like a heavy lid on the atmosphere. As the air underneath this lid is pressed down, it naturally warms up.
This high pressure also blocked the cool ocean breezes that normally blow inland from the Pacific Ocean to help cool down coastal areas. At the same time, wind patterns carried moist, tropical air into Southern California, creating sticky humidity. This humidity made the air feel even hotter and prevented temperatures from dropping much during the night.
Fortunately, weather patterns are expected to shift. The high-pressure system is projected to weaken, which should bring some relief and cooler temperatures to the affected areas as the week begins.
