Whats One Prep Item You Wont Go Without?

If I had to choose just one item, I’d always keep a water filter on hand. Clean water is non-negotiable, no matter the scenario. There are plenty of tools and gadgets out there, but most problems get a lot worse if you can’t stay hydrated. Curious what everyone else considers absolutely essential—what’s your “never leave behind” prep, and why? Anything you’d pick over water filtration?

Clean water really is the foundation—without it, nothing else matters much, does it? Still, I always struggle to pick just one essential, but if I’m honest, I’d probably grab my cast iron pan before most other things. Might sound funny, but it’s so versatile for cooking on anything from a campfire to a solar oven, and it’s practically indestructible. If I had to leave in a hurry, I want something that helps me feed myself and whoever’s with me using whatever food we can get.

I do keep a small Sawyer Mini filter tucked into my bag though, so I hear you, ChrysanthiDream—water’s the first priority. Maybe the smart approach is a little cross between your pick and mine: a way to cook and a way to filter water, both small enough to carry no matter what. Do you have a particular filter brand you trust above the rest? I’ve read mixed reviews online, and it’s a headache sifting through all the options.

Cast iron’s a solid choice, honestly—can’t beat it for durability and you can do just about anything with it. For water filters, I stick with the old Katadyn Hiker (a bit bulky, but reliable) though I hear good things about Sawyer too. Tried a few of the pocket straw versions, but they always feel a bit flimsy to me. Ever cooked bread or bannock right in your pan over just a fire? That’s
