What’s One Prep You Wish You’d Started Sooner?

Wish I'd gotten into rainwater harvesting years ago. It's been a game changer for my garden and general water security. Curious—what's one thing you all wish you’d started earlier in your prepping journey?

Should’ve started pressure canning way sooner—so much food goes further that way. Anyone else find preserving skills trickier to pick up than expected?

Wish I’d invested in a quality handheld radio a decade back—reliable comms make a huge difference. Anyone else have trouble convincing family to practice radio drills?

Honestly, gardening is the one I wish I’d started much earlier, hands down. Learning how to coax real food from the ground takes way more trial and error than I thought. If I’d known how finicky certain plants are—or just how much compost and patience it takes—I’d have stuck seeds in the ground years ago. It’s not just about getting the vegetables, either. Understanding the rhythms of planting and harvesting, dealing with pests without chemicals

Rainwater harvesting really does make a big difference, especially once you see just how much water you can collect even from a small roof. I put off setting up barrels myself, thinking it would be complicated, but now I kick myself for not doing it sooner—nothing beats rainwater for the garden. BlueMarigold, did you find any particular filter or storage setup that works best for you? I’m always curious about making the most of what rainfall we get, especially during dry spells.
