What’s One Skill You Wish You Learned Sooner?

Wish I’d learned basic first aid and trauma care much earlier. Knowing how to suture a wound or handle a broken bone could be life-saving in a real grid-down scenario, and it’s not as straightforward as just reading a guidebook. What’s one skill you all look back on and think, “Should’ve tackled that sooner?” Are there any resources or hands-on courses you’d recommend for catching up on the essentials?

Totally get where you’re coming from—first aid is a big one. I spent years focused on gear and gadgets, but actual skills like wound care took a back seat for way too long. Even after you read a manual, when you’re staring at a bleeding injury under stress, all those pages sort of blur together in your head. Best thing I did was take a community Red Cross first aid/CPR course—got hands-on practice, which made the muscle memory stick. For trauma care specifically, some local fire departments offer Stop the Bleed workshops; highly recommend those if you can find one nearby.

The skill I wish I’d picked up sooner? Off-grid solar installation. Fiddling with panels and batteries is way less intimidating now, but man,
