What’s the Best Multi-Use Item for Bug Out Bags?

When it comes to packing out a bug out bag, space and weight are always at a premium. I’ve tried to focus on everything that can serve more than one purpose, but I keep going back and forth on what really qualifies as the most valuable multi-use item. I’m partial to a good quality bandana—used it as a sling, dust mask, water filter pre-filter, even a signal flag, but I know folks swear by duct tape, multitools, or even something like a sturdy trash bag.

Curious what everyone else prioritizes. If you had to recommend ONE single multi-use item for someone starting their first bug out bag, what would it be and why? Looking for experiences where the item actually saved your bacon or just made a rough situation easier. Also, how do you balance durability versus versatility in whatever you choose?

I’d also be interested if anyone’s found something less obvious that isn’t often discussed but has earned its spot through actual use, not just theory. Always trying to streamline my kit and appreciate any input.

For less obvious gear, I’ve come to really
