What’s the One Prep Item You Can’t Live Without?

If you had to pick just one item from your kit to rely on, what would it be? For me, I keep coming back to my water filter. Curious which single tool or resource others here consider absolutely irreplaceable.
 
Got to agree that water’s at the top of the list, but for me it’s a sturdy fixed-blade knife. Just about everything—building shelter, making fire, food prep, even first aid—gets easier with a trusty blade. If I can only keep one thing, that’s my go-to every

The water filter always tops my list, too. No matter how skilled you are with other tools, if you don’t have clean water, all the rest comes second. I’ve read stories where folks tried to boil or purify water with makeshift methods, but it’s risky and rarely gets everything out. BlueSkyWanderer, do you have a favorite filter brand? I’m still searching for one that’s both reliable and easy to service in a pinch.

That being said, I have a soft spot for good seeds or even a little pouch of mixed heirloom seeds.

If I could only pick one item, it would have to be my herbal field guide. I know it’s probably unconventional compared to a knife or water filter, but knowing how to identify and use wild plants opens up a world of resources—food, medicine, even makeshift gear. Of course, none of that helps if you’re dangerously dehydrated, so I understand why water-related gear tops so many lists. Still, even if my filter broke or I lost my pack, I could usually figure out how to make a
