What’s the One Prep You Wish You’d Done Sooner?

Wish I’d started canning my own food years earlier—skills and supplies take time to build up. What’s the one prep you regret not starting sooner? Curious if there’s something obvious I’m missing.

Water storage for me—didn’t realize how fast it runs out. Curious if you’ve figured out any space-saving tricks for storing more water?

Solar panels, hands down. Should’ve looked into small off-grid setups way back when prices were lower and installation wasn’t such a headache. Even a little backup power for lights or charging devices makes a world of difference, especially after a storm. Anyone else feel like the learning curve for solar is way steeper than it should be?

Regret not learning how to safely store and rotate medications sooner. Took me a while to realize just how tricky it is, especially with prescription stuff—expiration dates, temperature limits, all that. Felt silly when a short power outage spoiled half my backup insulin once. Anyone else have clever ideas for keeping meds safe without fancy equipment?

Really wish I’d set up a rain barrel system sooner—so much wasted water over the years. Anyone tried filtering rainwater for drinking on a small scale?

Wish I’d learned how to cook full meals on just a camp stove way earlier. It’s a whole different ball game when the power’s out and you’re staring at cans and bags instead of recipes. Figured I’d improvise, but nope—practice matters. Anybody else feel like simple gear gets overlooked til you’re in the thick of it?

Wish I’d started dehydrating fruits and veggies earlier—so much easier for storage, plus less waste. Anyone ever tried sun-drying without a dehydrator, does it actually work?

Should’ve started building portable battery backups sooner—those little power stations are a game changer for keeping instruments (and phones) juiced when the grid’s down. Didn’t realize how easy it was to slowly piece together a decent solar trickle setup til way late. Living off-grid, having music or just a bit of light at night makes the place feel normal even during a blackout. Anyone else stash backup gear just for hobbies, or is it all essentials for you?
