What’s the One Prep You Wish You’d Started Sooner?

Wish I'd learned water purification beyond store-bought filters way sooner—boiling and bleach only go so far if you run out. What foundational skill do you all wish you'd started practicing earlier in your prepping journey?

Absolutely agree about water purification—there’s so much more to it than filters and tablets. For me, I wish I'd gotten serious about proper food storage earlier, not just canning but also drying and vacuum sealing. A lot of my early harvest went to waste before I really figured that out. BlueHarborTea, out of curiosity, have you experimented with solar distillation or charcoal filters? It's fascinating how many options there are when you start digging in.

Totally with you both on the water and food angle—really wish I’d learned proper seed saving way earlier, honestly. Ever run into issues with seeds not germinating after storage?

Wish I’d started practicing radio comms under stress, not just theory—whole different ballgame when you’re rushed or nervous. Anyone else ever freeze up on the mic during drills?

Wish I’d started regular practice with basic knots—sounds simple but wow, so easy to forget under pressure. Anyone else find themselves fumbling with rope when it actually matters?

Really regret not diving into first aid skills much sooner. I had the basics down from nursing, but real-world, off-grid first aid is a whole different beast—especially if you don’t have all the proper supplies at hand. Practicing with just what's in your bug-out bag (or even improvising with things around the house) opened my eyes. It’s one thing to read about making splints or stopping bleeding, doing it without fancy gear is another story.

Also, wish I’d started learning wild edible plants in my area way earlier. You think

Getting serious about off-grid power a lot earlier would’ve made everything easier for me. I always figured having a gas generator tucked away was enough—turns out fuel storage, noise, and maintenance become big headaches fast. Solar panels seemed too technical at first, but once I finally set up a small array with a battery bank, it changed everything: quieter, cleaner

Those silica gel packs really do the trick—humidity ruined a whole batch of bean seeds for me once. Ever try storing seeds in the freezer for longer-term viability?

Starting a real medicinal herb garden and actually using it for remedies is what I wish I’d begun decades ago. I always kept a few culinary herbs around—basil, oregano, the usual suspects—but never took time to research or practice tinctures, salves, infusions. Once I retired, I realized just how many common garden plants can be useful in first aid situations, especially if you’re cut off

Seed saving tripped me up too—didn’t realize how much humidity can mess things up. Ever tried those silica gel packs for longer-term storage?

Those little silica gel packs are surprisingly helpful, especially if you’re somewhere humid. I tuck a couple in each jar of seeds, and it’s made a real difference—way fewer clumps and sprouting mishaps. EchoTangoFox, do you ever reuse the packs

Wish I’d started pressure canning sooner—took me ages to get over the fear, but it’s a game changer for pantry variety. Anyone else still get nervous using theirs?
