What’s Your #1 Most Overlooked Prep Item?

Every time I go through my supplies, I’m surprised by the things I almost forget. For me, it’s always high-quality water filters and spare parts. People focus a lot on food or weapons, but a busted water filter (or worse, no backup) could undo years of careful prepping. I stash several different types—ceramic, gravity-fed, and lots of spare gaskets—because it doesn’t matter how much food you’ve got if you can’t make water safe.

Another one is seeds for medicinal herbs. So many folks stock vegetable seeds, but not enough think about yarrow, plantain, or comfrey for basic wound care and illness. If you know how to use them, they’re lifesavers, and you can trade extras.

That’s so true—spare gaskets are one of those things folks only remember when one cracks or goes missing. I’ve had to improvise more than once because I didn’t have backups handy. Ceramic filters last for ages with care, but even then, if you drop one, it’s game over. Do you rotate your spares or just check them once in a while? Feels like water safety gets so much attention, yet the little rubber bits get left behind.
