What’s Your Go-To Backup Power Solution?

Solar’s my primary, but cloudy stretches worry me. I keep a small gas generator as backup but hate relying on fuel that might run out or go bad. Has anyone had real luck with battery banks or hand-crank generators for longer outages? Curious what’s actually lasted in a real emergency, not just on paper. Would love any recommendations for low-maintenance options that don

Those cloudy spells can really test your setup, for sure. I’ve had a decent experience with lithium battery banks—paired with solar, they’ll hold enough charge to keep my amp and lights going for a couple nights, but you’re right, when the sun hides, it gets tricky.

Swapping out to a larger lithium battery bank helped me too, but honestly, crank generators just aren't worth the effort for anything more than a flashlight. Anyone found a better manual option?

Hand-crank generators are basically a novelty for anything bigger than charging a phone or LED lantern. I tried one during a two-day outage—arms nearly fell off, and still couldn’t run anything meaningful. What actually worked for me was putting together a portable LiFePO4 battery bank (200Ah) plus a folding solar panel array. The battery’s been rock solid for running an amp, a small fridge, and some lights for a few days. Key was keeping power draws low and cycling between daytime charging and nighttime use.

Cloudy days will bite, though. I added a cheap wind turbine as a
