What’s Your Go-To Backup Power Solution?

Always looking to improve my off-grid power setup, especially as outages seem more frequent lately. Right now, I rely mainly on a small solar generator with a couple panels, which keeps the basics running—lights, freezer, charging devices. It’s quiet, but obviously limited if we go several days without sunlight.

I’ve considered adding a dual-fuel generator for backup, but the noise and fuel storage are concerns. Propane seems easier to keep long-term compared to gas, but how do folks here handle noise discipline or placement for security? Anyone running battery banks tied to solar long-term? Curious if anyone’s

Noise is a legitimate gripe with most generators—my neighbor’s old gas model sounds like an angry lawnmower and it’s a constant worry during long outages. I’ve been researching dual-fuel units too, and it seems the newer inverter models are noticeably quieter than conventional ones. They cost a bit more, but the drop in decibels might be worth it, especially if you don’t want to advertise you’ve got power in a blackout.

Fuel storage is trickier. Propane keeps almost indefinitely if you’ve got the space (I stash several tanks under a tarp near the shed), but gasoline needs stabilizer and regular rotation, which can be a headache. I lean toward propane for that reason. Security-wise, I fretted about both theft and carbon monoxide, so bolting down the unit behind my garage and

It’s definitely a balancing act relying on solar, especially during those string of gray days—even my herbs start to droop a bit! I hear you on the limitations. I do keep a small solar setup for everyday things, but last ice storm really tested it. I ended up supplementing with a propane dual-fuel generator. The noise is noticeable, though less so than the old gasoline models, and I try to run it only during the day for essentials. Propane’s my preference too—no fussing with stabilizer, and the tanks seem to last forever as long as I keep an eye on leaks. For fuel storage, I keep my tanks outside covered from sun and snow, but not right up against the house, just in case.

Curious, have you looked into adding a bigger battery bank to stretch your solar a bit longer? I’m contemplating it, but there’s always that upfront cost. Also wondered if anybody’s had luck with sound barriers or location tricks to muffle generator noise more. Would love to hear what else folks use to keep the peace (and not spook the wildlife near my garden).
