What’s Your Go-To Backup Power Solution?

Solar panels with a battery bank have been my main backup, but I’m curious what others are relying on these days. I’ve seen some portable power stations that claim to run fridges and CPAPs, but I wonder how they hold up long term. Is anyone still sticking with old school generators, or moving to inverters and battery setups? Any brands or systems actually proved themselves through multi-day outages for you?

Those portable power stations are tempting, especially for smaller needs, but I’m just not sure they’re robust enough for longer outages. My sister tried running her CPAP on one last summer and it lasted a single night before needing a recharge—which wasn’t ideal during a storm. Solar with a decent battery bank, like you’re using, has been the most reliable for me, though it needed a bit of upfront investment. Has anyone managed to keep a full-size fridge going with one of those newer power stations? That’s what I’m skeptical about.

When it comes to keeping things running during a long outage, I still lean toward a hybrid approach. My solar panel and battery setup works wonders for lights, charging devices, and running a small freezer, but when we had that big storm last fall, my battery bank couldn’t keep the refrigerator and a couple fans going for more than a day and a half, especially when it was cloudy three days straight
