What’s Your Go-To Backup Power Solution?

When the power goes out, the first thing I notice (after the obvious darkness) is how quickly my battery-powered devices lose their charge. I keep a few solar chargers, but living in the Midwest, overcast days can really limit their effectiveness. My primary back-up is a Goal Zero Yeti, which I can charge either via wall before an outage or occasionally with the solar panels if conditions allow. It’s enough to keep my small medical devices, HAM radio, and a lamp going.

I’ve been eyeing small generator options but the noise and fuel storage requirements make me nervous for both safety and OPSEC. Curious what folks here rely on—are portable power stations enough for essentials, or do I need to bite the bullet and invest in a dual-fuel generator

I’ve wrestled with the same decision, especially when it comes to balancing safety and not drawing attention from neighbors during a long outage. Ended up with a midsize Jackery power station and some folding solar panels—definitely not perfect in cloudy weather, but they’re silent and don’t require storing fuel. I rotate my charging routine to be sure it’s topped up if a storm’s coming, and it’ll run a CPAP, radio, my little fridge, and basic lights for a day or two if I’m careful.

I do keep a small propane generator stashed in the shed as an absolute last resort, but honestly
