What’s Your Go-To Backup When the Power Goes Out?

First thing I do when the power blinks out is reach for my oil lamps—they’ve been more reliable than those newer LED lanterns, at least in terms of lasting through multiple nights. I keep a stash of extra wicks and oil in the pantry just for this. For cooking, I've gotten the most mileage from a small rocket stove I built out of bricks in the backyard. It burns pretty much any dry wood scraps and gets hot fast. Has anyone tried those solar ovens during winter months? Curious if they’re worth the prep and space, or more trouble than they’re worth when the sun’s low.

Rocket stoves are my favorite too—so simple but get the job done! Tried a solar oven last January, but it barely warmed soup. Anyone have tips for cloudy days?
