What’s Your Go-To DIY Water Filtration Method?

For years I relied on a basic Berkey setup, but I’ve gotten more interested in true off-grid, no-power backup options lately. I’ve experimented with bio-sand filters—layering gravel, sand, and charcoal in food-grade buckets—and the results have been promising for garden and non-potable uses. Haven’t yet trusted it fully for drinking unless boiled after

I've tried a similar setup for camp water, but I’ve wondered—do you notice any weird flavors from the DIY charcoal? Sometimes mine comes out a bit “earthy” if I don’t rinse it enough.

That earthy taste from homemade charcoal is familiar! I’ve found it really depends on what wood you burn and making sure it’s fully carbonized before using. I rinse my charcoal several times, breaking it up a bit so there aren’t any pockets of ash stuck inside. Sometimes it takes more rinsing than you’d think. I also let the filter run with clean water a few times before using it for anything important—just to flush out that first round of “off” flavors.
